Katynin metsässä vuonna 1940 tapahtuneessa joukkomurhassa Puolaan tunkeutunut Neuvostoliiton armeija tappoi lähteiden mukaan jopa yli 20 000 ihmistä ilman oikeudenkäyntiä. 1943 natsit löysivät joukkohaudat. Saksalaiset käyttivät tapahtumaa oman propagandansa välineenä, kun taas Neuvostoliitto kielsi kaiken ja syytti joukkomurhasta Saksaa.
