Tohtori Alex Harris on aikansa tekoälynero ja kehittelee tietokoneita, joiden mahdollisuudet ovat rajattomat. Harrisin uusin tekoäly alkaa kehittää itseään ja lopulta tämä Proteus IV -systeemi alkaa kapinoida. Aamulla Harrisin vaimo Susan herää ja on lähdössä töihin, kun huomaa että ei pääse talosta ulos: Proteus on vallannut talon, eikä päästä Susania lähtemään talosta mihinkään. Sitten Proteus kertoo todellisen syyn Susanin vangitsemiseen: Hän haluaa, että Susan synnyttää hänelle lapsen. Tietokoneiden ajattelukyky on ylittänyt tutkijoiden ajattelukyvyn. Koneiden ja ihmisten välistä rajaa ei ole.
