Vuonna 1984 Israel ja Yhdysvallat pyrkivät pelastamaan kaikki Etiopian juutalaiset maassa riehuneelta nälänhädältä ja kuljettamaan heidät Israeliin. Massiivinen pelastushanke muistetaan nimeltä Operaatio Mooses. Tavallisen afrikkalaisen pojan, Schlomon, äiti pakottaa tämän esiintymään juutalaisena, jotta tämä pääsisi pois armottomasta, riutuvasta maasta ja säästyisi nälkäkuolemalta. Schlomo päätyy Tel Aviviin, jossa hänet adoptoidaan Ranskasta Israeliin muuttaneeseen perheeseen. Hän onnistuu esiintymään orpona, mutta äitiään syvästi ikävöivä poika joutuu kasvamaan jatkuvassa paljastumisen pelossa... Vuosien varrella Schlomo alkaa pikkuhiljaa sopeutua uuteen elinympäristöönsä, joka on juutalaisten ja muiden länsimaalaisten uskontojen ja arvojen sulatusuuni, ja jossa Israelin ja Palestiinan välinen konflikti ja rotuennakkoluulot ovat läsnä joka päivä.
