Aikakone perustuu H. G. Wellsin samannimiseen romaaniin (1895) ja sen tapahtumat alkavat uudenvuoden aattona 1899, kun seurue Georgen ystäviä kokoontuu illastamaan. George saapuu henkihievereissä verstaastaan ja kertoo lähes koko elokuvan kestävässä takautumassa tarinansa aikamatkasta.
