Betsy Connell, nuori sairaanhoitaja, etsii uutta työpaikkaa. Rikas liikemies tarjoaa hänelle töitä eräältä Karibianmeren saarelta. Betsy suostuu työhön, vaikka uusi työpaikka sijaitsee kaukana. Hänen tehtävänään on hoitaa miehen sairasta vaimoa, joka ei osaa enää puhua ja katsoo aina tyhjyyteen. Mitään ei ole tehtävissä, mutta Betsy haluaa auttaa häntä.
