Vanheneva kulttuuripariskunta odottaa puhelinsoittoa ja viestiä mahdollisesta kirjallisuuden Nobel-palkinnosta. Vaimo yrittää rauhoitella kärsimätöntä miestä, mutta on itsekin pakahtua, kun puhelu lopulta tulee. Puolisoilla on pitkään ollut selkeä työnjako. Mies hoitaa menestyskirjojen mukanaan tuoman julkisuuden ja verkostoitumisen. Vaimo mahdollistaa sen maailman silmissä hoitamalla kotia ja perhettä ja komppaamalla miehen esiintymisiä neuvoillaan ja ulkoasun hiomisella. Hän on ollut miehensä täydellisin asuste lähes neljän vuosikymmenen ajan. Jollakin tavalla asiat eivät kuitenkaan ole samoin kuin ennen. Nobel-palkinto on jotain sellaista, minkä puolesta kumpikin on paiskinut töitä. Mutta työ on ollut oma palkkionsa. Nyt mies saa - aikaisemmastakin huomiosta huolimatta - jonkinlaisen kulminaation uralleen. Mitä saa palkakseen hänen rinnallaan seisonut ja häntä eteenpäin ajanut vaimo?
