Huhtkuu 1942. Yhdysvaltojen merivoimat kamppailevat voimattomina natsien sukellusveneitä vastaan, sillä saksalaisilla on käytössään Enigma - salainen koodauslaite, jonka koodia Yhdysvallat eivät ole onnistuneet purkamaan. Vanha sukellusvene S-33 miehistöineen lähetetään kauas vihollisten linjojen taakse tehtävänään hakea tämä huippusalainen koodauslaite saksalaisten sukellusveneestä. Salaiseen tehtävään pestatun sukellusveneen kipparina toimii kokenut konkari Mike Dahlgren ja perämiehenä Andrew Tyler, jonka olisi jo pitänyt saada ylennys ja päästä kipparoimaan omaa sukellusvenettä. S-33:n miehistö koostuu tavallisista merisotilaista, joista useimmat ovat nuorempia kuin heidän luotsaamansa sukellusvene, mukana mm. Tylerin paras ystävä Pete Emmett ja päällikkö Klough. Kukaan heistä ei merelle lähtiessään tiedä, mikä heitä odottaa...
