Toiseen maailmansotaan sijoittuvien tapahtumien keskushenkilö on puolalainen sotilas Janusz, joka tuomitaan vakoojana Siperian pahamaineiselle vankileirille. Erämaan ja kylmyyden saartamassa vankilassa hallitsevat venäläiset rikolliset, eivätkä heikoimmat selviä äärimmäisissä olosuhteissa. Janusz ryhtyy pian suunnittelemaan pakoa ja hänen ympärilleen muodostuu tiivis poliittisten vankien rinki. Tiimin vahvin voima on vaitelias amerikkalainen, Mister Smith. Mukaan pakomatkalle hivuttautuu myös rikollisjengin kovanaama Valka, murhamies, joka ansaitsee paikkansa pakoremmistä ainoastaan puukkonsa takia.Vangit onnistuvat pakenemaan leirin piikkilanka-aitojen läpi ja eksyttämään koirapartiot kannoiltaan. Pian he ovat vapaita miehiä jäisessä metsässä. Pako johtaa Siperiasta ensin Mongoliaan ja lopulta Tiibetin kautta Intiaan. Matkaa kertyy 6 500 kilometriä. Elokuva perustuu puolalaisen Slavomir Rawiczin muistelmateokseseen The Long Walk.
