Egyptiläinen Aleksandrian poliisin juhlasoittokunta matkustaa Israeliin esiintyäkseen paikallisen arabikulttuurikeskuksen avajaisissa. Orkesterin jähmeä johtaja Tewfiq on päättänyt hoitaa arvokkaasti ja menestyksekkäästi tehtävän, jonka varassa voi olla koko orkesterin tulevaisuus. Katastrofin merkit ovat kuitenkin ilmassa heti, kun taivaansiniseen univormuun puettu arabiorkesteri laskeutuu instrumentteineen Israelin kamaralle: ketään ei ole vastassa, isäntiin tai konsulaattiin ei saada yhteyttä ja lopulta kielivaikeuksien säestämänä kovaonninen torvisoittokunta löytää itsensä syrjäisen israelilaisen pikkukaupungin laitamilta keskeltä erämaata. Kun helpotusta tilanteeseen ei ole luvassa, paikallisen kuppilan pitäjät ja kanta-asiakkaat, etunenässä rempseä Dina, ottavat eksyneet, pettyneet, uupuneet ja nälkäiset soittajat hoiviinsa. Pakon edessä orkesteri joutuu nielemään ylpeytensä, ja niin lievien alkukankeuksien jälkeen alkaa kommellusten sävyttämä kulttuurien lähentyminen.
