John elää elämänkumppaninsa Ericin ja heidän tyttärensä Monican kanssa Kaliforniassa, kaukana nuoruuden ja lapsuuden karusta maalaiselämästä. John majoittaa alkavan muistisairauden heikentämän isänsä Willisin luokseen. John toivoo siskonsa Sarahin kanssa, että erakoitunut ja itsepäinen isä luopuisi viimein tilanhoidosta ja muuttaisi lähemmäksi aikuisia lapsiaan. Valitettavasti Willisin lasten hyvää tarkoittavat aikeet valuvat hukkaan, isän kieltäytyessä ymmärtämästä tilannettaan. Isän vierailu nostaa pintaan kipeitä menneisyyden tapahtumia, jotka kiristävät koko perheen välejä. Pala palalta John yrittää rakentaa muistisairaan isänsä kanssa eroavaisista muistoista ehyempää tarinaa. Kilpajuoksussa muistisairauden kanssa, isän ja pojan on myös löydettävä keino nähdä toisensa uudessa armollisemmassa valossa.
