Kamputsea 1973. Toimittaja Sydney Schanberg tekee juttua punaisten Khmerien vallankaappauksesta, joka vaatii yli miljoonan ihmisen hengen. Schanbergin ystävä ja tulkki Dith Pran toimii tämän paikallisena kontaktina Kambodžan pääkaupungissa Phnom Penhissä, jossa punaiset khmerit aiheuttavat jatkuvasti levottomuuksia. Tiimiin kuuluu myös valokuvaaja Al Rockoff. Levottomuudet pahenevat ja Pranin perhe järjestetään turvaan Kambodžan ulkopuolelle, mutta Pran haluaa jäädä ja jatkaa toimitustyötä. Lopulta länsimaalaiset evakuoidaan maasta ja Pran joutuu punakhmerien vangiksi ja lähetetään epäinhimillisiin oloihin veriselle keskitysleirille. Schanberg taistelee Yhdysvalloista käsin ystävänsä pelastamiseksi. Koska Kambodza oli täysin suljettu, tietojen liikkuminen sinne tai takaisin oli lähes mahdotonta.
