Tsekkoslovakiassa asuva 55-vuotias Louka on lahjakas muusikko, jolla oli uransa puolesta takanaan loistava tulevaisuus. Hänen aikoinaan valtiovaltaa vastaan osoittama protesti piti huolen siitä, että musisointi valtion sinfoniaorkesterissa loppui kuin seinään. Nyt Louka elättää itseään antamalla soittotunteja, koristelemalla hautakiviä ja esiintymällä hautajaisissa. Vapaa-aikansa hän käyttää nuorten naisten liehittelyyn - varsin hyvällä menestyksellä. Kun nuoren ja viehättävän venäläisen naisen, Nadezdan, pitää oleskeluluvan saamiseksi löytää tsekkiläinen aviomies, suostuu Louka tämän perheen tarjoukseen mennä maksua vastaan naimisiin Nadezdan kanssa. Mutta ennen kuin riisi on karissut häähunnusta, häipyy Nadezda poikaystävänsä luokse Saksaan, jättäen 6-vuotiaan poikansa, Kolyan, Loukan huostaan.
