Elokuva keskittyy Asunaan, nuoreen tyttöön, joka viettää yksinäiset päivänsä kuunnellen kristalliradiosta, jonka hän sai edesmenneeltä isältään muistoksi. Eräänä päivänä kotiin kävellessään häntä hyökkää pelottava hirviö ja hänet pelastaa salaperäinen poika nimeltä Shun. Kuitenkin Shun katoaa, ja Asuna lähtee seikkailumatkalle Agarthan maahan opettajansa herra Morisakin kanssa tavatakseen Shunin uudelleen. Matkansa aikana hän oppii tuntemaan maailman julmuuden ja kauneuden sekä menetyksen.
