Eletään 50-lukua. Yhdysvaltain pääkaupunkiin Washington D.C.:hen saapuu avaruusalus, josta tulee ulos robotti Gort sekä meidän ihmisten näköinen avaruusolio Klaatu. Klaatu haluaa kertoa maapallon ihmisille, että heidän pitää elää rauhassa, jotta heidän planeettansa selviytyisi ja lakkaisi olemasta vaara toisille planeetoille, mutta vain harvat kuuntelevat häntä. Koko maailma on hämmästynyt ja Klaatu karkaa sairaalasta, jonne hänet vietiin ampumavälikohtauksen vuoksi. Hän kysyy eräältä perheeltä, voiko hän jäädä heille yöksi ja saa myöntävän vastauksen.
