Eletään vuotta 2130. Ihmiskunta on lähettänyt retkikuntia ympäri avaruutta etsimään elinkelpoisia planeettoja. Takaisin maahan palaavan pienellä U.S.S. Palomino-avaruusaluksella robotti Vincent huomaa salaperäisen "mustan aukon", jolla on suunnaton vetovoima. Mustaa aukkoa lähestyessään Palominon miehistö huomaa myös jotain muuta, he näkevät jättiläismäisen avaruusalus Cygnys'in, joka katosi jo 20 vuotta sitten erästä tehtävää suorittaessaan. Nyt Palomino lähestyy sitä tutkiakseen, onko aluksessa ketään eloonjäänyttä. Cygnus-alukseen lähetetty retkikunta löytää aluksesta sen komentajan Hans Reinhardin, joka on myös koko aluksen ainoa elävä ihminen. Koko muu miehistö koostuu Reinhardtin rakentamista roboteista. Tohtori Reinhardtin aikomuksena on ajaa Cygnus mustan aukon läpi toiseen maailmaan. Palominon miehistö ei vakuutu Reinhardtin puheista. Jos hän on aluksella ypöyksin, miksi aluksen puutarha on niin valtava, ja miksi kuollut robotti haudataan avaruuteen?
