Hollywoodin Tiibet-muotivillitykseen osunut Scorsesen elokuva kertoo 14. dalai-laman tarinan. Tenzing Geyche on vain 2-vuotias, kun hänet valitaan Tiibetiä 1600-luvulta hallinneen dalailaman personoitumaksi. Elokuva seuraa Tenzingin koulutusta, kasvua ja vuoden 1959 maanpakoon johtaneita tapahtumia. Nobelin rauhanpalkinnon saanut dalai-lama auttoi käsikirjoituksen teossa Melissa Mathisonia, joka muuten on Harrison Fordin ex-vaimo.
