Defiance on lähitulevaisuuteen sijoittuva tieteissarja. Votan-niminen muukalaisrotujen liittouma saapuu asuttamaan Maata heidän oma aurinkokuntansa tuhouduttua, mutta heidän yllätyksekseen planeetta onkin jo asuttu. Välien kiristyminen kulminoituu Votanien avaruusaluksen räjähtämiseen Maan kiertoradalla, joka vapauttaa Maapallolle muukalaisten terraformaus-teknologian. Sen hallitsematon leviäminen on muuttanut planeetan vaaralliseksi niin ihmisille kuin Votaneille.
