Humans kertoo maailmasta, jossa elämän nopea rytmi ja kiire on luonut markkinat uudelle kodinkoneelle - ihmismäiselle robotille. Robotti osaa tehdä työtä, kykenee tuntemaan ja rakastamaan ja pystyy jopa korvaamaan seksikumppanin. Eräs esikaupungissa asuva perhe hankkii kunnostetun palvelijarobotin tarkoituksenaan parantaa elämänlaatuaan. Pian he huomaavat, että arjen jakaminen koneen kanssa ei olekkaan niin yksinkertaista - yhteiselolla voi olla kauaskantoisia ja arvaamattomia seuraksia. Mihin enää tarvitaan meitä ihmisiä, joiden kyvyt ovat säälittävän rajalliset?
