זהו סיפור על אדם שאהב, אהב ופשוט אהב. זהו סיפור על אהבה שהייתה מעל הכל, אפילו מעל החיים עצמם. דבדאס נולד אל תוך עולם הנשלט על ידי העושר. בבית כילד נהג להשתולל עם חבריו בשדות הירוקים ועל כך ספג לא פעם מידי אביו, זאמינדר נאראיין מקרג'י , הצלפות . אך דבדאס, העקשן, הבליג בשקט. מי שהייתה לצדו תמיד, וידעה להשתתף בסבלו הייתה חברת ילדותו פרווטי. השניים ידעו צחוק, שמחה, מריבות והקנטות ודבדאס האמין בכל ליבו שפארו תמיד תהיה רק שלו. זאת הייתה ילדות מיוחדת במינה שבה כאילו רק שניהם היו קיימים. הם לא ידעו אז שהזרעים של תשוקתם הגדולה והגורלית כבר נזרעו. הם הרגישו אהבה גדולה עוד לפני שיכלו להבין מהי. אך החלום נגדע מהר. זקני הכפר החליטו שעתידו של דבדאס יהיה טוב יותר אם ייסע ללמוד בלונדון. על השניים נגזר להיפרד. פרידה שהייתה קשה מנשוא. בכל אחד מהימים והשנים שבאו אח"כ השניים המשיכו להיפגש... במחשבותיהם, בזיכרונות שלהם ובחלומות שלהם. אבל בשביל פארו זה לא היה מספיק, עולמה חרב עליה. בגעגועיה הגדולים אליו היא הדליקה מנורת שמן (diya ) המסמלת את שובו המהיר של האהוב.
