ואריס נולדה למשפחת רועי צאן נוודים בסומליה. בגיל 13 היא ברחה מנישואיי כפייה, נדדה במדבר עד שהגיע לבירה מוגדישו, משם נשלחה ללונדון לעבוד כמשרתת בשגרירות סומליה. שם בילתה את ימי התבגרותה. כשנאלצה לחזור לסומליה הקרועה ממלחמת אזרחים, בחרה לברוח ולהישאר בלונדון ומצאה את עצמה ללא מקום לגור וללא תעודות. מרלין הלונדונית, מוכרת צבעונית בחנות בגדים, נוטלת אותה תחת חסותה ונותנת לה מקלט. הצלם הכוכב טרי דונלדסון מגלה את ואריס במזנון בו ניקתה ובסיוע הסוכנת האמביציוזית לוסינדה הופכת ואריס לסופר מודל. אך למרות ההצלחה הבינלאומית פצעי העבר וסוד נורא מילדותה רודפים אותה.
