בלילה חורפי קר וגשום, קבצנית זקנה ומכוערת דפקה על דלתה של טירה בה חיי נסיך. הקבצנית התחננה בפני הנסיך למחסה מפני הקור והגשם, והציעה לו בתמורה ורד יחיד כתשלום. בהיותו אנוכי ורע-לב, דחה הנסיך את הקבצנית מהסיבה הפשוטה שהיא מכוערת. הקבצנית הזהירה את הנסיך שהיופי האמיתי נמצא בלב ולא במראה חיצוני, וכאשר דחה הנסיך את הקבצנית בשנית נמוגה צורתה המכוערת ולפניו נגלתה מכשפה צעירה ויפהפייה. הנסיך ניסה להתנצל, אל ללא הועיל. כעונש על אכזריותו של הנסיך הטילה המכשפה כישוף רב עוצמה על הטירה ועל כל יושבייה - היא הפכה את הנסיך לחיה מפלצתית, את המשרתים בטירה הפכה לכלי בית כמו ספלי תה, נרות, רהיטים וכדומה, ואת הטירה עצמה הפכה למקום מבעית ומפחיד. הכישוף יכול להישבר רק אם ילמד החיה לאהוב אחרת ולקבל את אהבתה בתמורה. אולם, זה חייב לקרות עד אשר יבול וינשור העלה האחרון מהורד המכושף שהציעה המכשפה לנסיך, כי אם אז ישאר הנסיך בצורתו המפלצתית עד קץ הימים. בעוד השנים עוברות, שקע הנסיך ביאוש ובכעס, כי מי יוכל לאהוב חיה מפלצתית כמוהו?
