ג'ון ווטרס נשאר תמיד נאמן לגרסתו המרוסקת של אמריקה, וזה בולט אולי יותר מכל בסרט הזה, המגולל את מאבקם של באבס ג'ונסון, טרנסווסטיט ענקית מימדים (דיוויין) ובנה, לשמור על התואר "האנשים המטונפים ביותר באמריקה". אפילו הדור שידע את "ג'קאס" ו"אפקט הפחד" לא יוכל להישאר אדיש למעלליהם של השניים, ובמיוחד לרגע השיא בו באבס טועמת להנאתה צואת כלבים מהבילה. למעשה, כל ז'אנר ההגעלות הטלויזיוני חייב לא מעט לסרטו של ווטרס. סרט ההמשך "Flamingos Forever" נכתב אבל מעולם לא צולם, בעקבות מותה ללא עת של דיוויין.
