העלילה מתרחשת בעיקרה בצרפת ובאיטליה בשנים 1814-1838, על רקע סוף תקופתו של נפוליאון בונפרטה. הסרט עוסק בנושאים של צדק, נקמה וגמול. אדמונד דנטס צעיר ומבטיח נבגד ע"י חברו הטוב ונשלח ל-18 שנים בכלא. הוא בורח משם ודורש את מרסדס אהובתו ונקמה ממפליליו. בערמומיות אכזרית הוא חודר אל שורות האצולה הצרפתית בשם הרוזן ממונטה קריסטו ובאופן שיטתי מתחיל להרוס את שהביא לכליאתו. משחק ענק של הצרפתי ג'רארד דה-פארדיו.
