Jednom davno u Bagdadu živio je princ Ahmad (J. Justin) kojeg čim je postao kralj uhiti njegov zli savjetnik Jaffar (C. Veidt). Jaffar preuzme prijestolje, a Ahmad u tamnici upozna mladića Abua (Sabu), najvećeg bagdadskog lopova. Abu pomogne Ahmadu da dan prije pogubljenja pobjegne u Basru. U Basri se Ahmad zaljubi u sultanovu kćer (J. Duprez) i u vrtu njezinog dvorca ukaže joj se u vodi malog jezera kao da je duh iz boce. Bio je to samo njegov odraz u vodi, a kad se s drveta spusti na zemlju kraj princeze i ona se zaljubi u njega. Drugog dana sultana posjeti Jaffar i pokloni mu mehaničkog konja na kojem sultan može letjeti iznad krovova. Za uzvrat zatraži ruku sultanove kćeri. U tom se času pojave Ahmad i Abu, a Jaffar, koji je i čarobnjak, čarolijom oslijepi Ahmada, a Abua pretvori u psa. Princezu uzme k sebi no ona ga ne voli i misli samo na Ahmada. Ahmad će od tada imati tri cilja u životu - da skine čarolije sa sebe i Abua, spasi princezu i vrati se na prijestolje koje mu pripada.
