Za svoj redateljski prvijenac François Truffaut, nekad filmski kritičar, a sada redatelj, inspiraciju je pronašao u vlastitu nesretnom djetinjstvu. Jean-Pierre Léaud glumi Antoinea Doinela, Truffautov predadolescentski alter ego. Kod kuće Antoinea ne shvaćaju roditelji, a u školi ga muči neljubazni učitelj (Guy Decomble) te on često bježi. Kad ga učitelj optuži zbog plagiranja, trajno napušta školu. Ukrade pisaći stroj ocu (Albert Remy) kako bi financirao planove za odlazak od kuće. Gnjevni otac preda Antoinea policiji, koja ga zatvori s okorjelim kriminalcima. Psiholog u centru za delikvente ispipava Antoineovu potištenost, koju ovaj otkriva u fragmentiranom nizu monologa.
