Psiholog Kris Kelvin poslan je na udaljenu svemirsku postaju koja kruži oko tajanstvenog planeta Solarisa. Misija mu je istražiti neobična ponašanja preostale posade i moguće ih vratiti na Zemlju. Po dolasku, otkriva da je jedan znanstvenik mrtav, a druga dvojica su u stanju teške psihičke rastrojenosti.
