Veliki vojvoda Charles, princ-regent balkanske države Karpatije, dolazi 1911. u London sa svojim maloljetnim sinom, kraljem Nicholasom, kako bi prisustvovao krunidbi novog britanskog kralja. Slobodnu večer princ provodi u Coconut Girls Clubu, gdje ga šarmira američka plesačica Elsie Marina. Princ pozove Elsie u karpatijsku ambasadu na privatnu večeru, gdje se njih dvoje zbliže, a ona shvati i da je on sklon diktaturi, dok je njegov sin Nicholas reformistički orijentiran. Sazna i da pronjemački raspoloženi Nicholas želi silom prijevremeno preuzeti tron. Politička situacija u Karpatiji jako je važna, jer britanskoj kruni nije svejedno hoće li u napetoj europskoj situaciji utjecajna balkanska država savezništvo sklopiti s Velikom Britanijom ili Njemačkom.
