Kada Gelsominu, naivnu mladu ženu, od siromašne majke otkupi grubi cirkuski moćnik Zampanò da mu bude supruga i partnerica, ona odano podnosi muževljevu hladnoću i zlostavljanje dok zajedno putuju talijanskim selom nastupajući. Ubrzo se Zampanò mora nositi sa svojom ljubomorom i pomiješanim osjećajima prema Gelsomini kad ona pronađe srodnu dušu u Il Mattu, bezbrižnom cirkuskom budali, i razmišlja o odlasku iz Zampanòa.
