Sestre Dashwood, razumna Elinor i strastvena Marianne, čije se šanse za brak čine osuđene na propast zbog iznenadnog gubitka bogatstva njihove obitelji. Kada Henry Dashwood iznenada umre, njegovo imanje po zakonu mora prijeći na sina iz prvog braka, Johna i njegovu suprugu Fanny.
