Butch Cassidy (P. Newman) i njegov najbolji prijatelj i partner Sundance Kid (R. Dok šerifi gradića u kojima simpatični razbojnici opljačkaju banku za njima neuspjelo organiziraju potjere, Butch i Sundance ponekad i pred njihovim očima uživaju u društvu prostitutki i Sundanceove romantične djevojke, učiteljice Ette Place (K. Ross). Kad jednog dana za njima krene potjera predvođena slavnim indijanskim tragačem Joeom Leforsom iz Oklahome, dvojica nerazdvojnih prijatelja odluče pobjeći u Meksiko.
