Za vrijeme jedne političke krize u Rusiji četiri pobunjene armije s oko 60.000 ljudi zauzmu rusku nuklearnu bazu na Tihom oceanu. Postoji realna opasnost da bi mogli izvesti nuklearni napad na Ameriku, pa su američke vojne snage u pripravnosti. Zapovjednik američke nuklearne podmornice "Alabame", Frank Ramsey (G. Hackman), u tom času dobije novog zamjenika, prvog časnika Rona Huntera (D. Washington). "Alabama" plovi ispod površine Tihog oceana i približava se ruskoj obali. U jednom trenutku prime obavijest da su ruski pobunjenici dovezli gorivo do nuklearnih raketa, što znači da ih mogu lansirati za jedan sat. Posada "Alabame" je u stanju najviše pripravnosti. Napetost između Huntera i Ramseyja je vrlo velika, a ona će se osobito pojačati kad će nakon sukoba s ruskom podmornicom njihove radio-veze biti prekinute.
