Stanovnici planeta Thundera evakuiraju se neposredno prije nego što je planet uništen. Progonila ih je skupina mutanata. Svi osim jednog njihovog broda za bijeg su uništeni. Ostala je samo mala skupina Thunderana (Thundercatsa). S tek pola snage motora, grupa, koju je predvodio Jaga, morala je postaviti kurs prema najbližem planetu. Jaga je zapovijedao njihovim brodom dok su ostalih sedam bili u stazis cijevima. Jaga je poginuo na putu prema Trećoj Zemlji, a njihov brod se tamo srušio. Ubrzo su se sprijateljili s raznim skupinama u okolici i dizajnirali tvrđavu. Mumm-Ra, stoljetno utjelovljenje zla, zajedno s mutantima koji su uništili ostatak Thunderana, stalna je prijetnja. Ali Lion-O, novi vođa Thundercatsa, sa svojim oružjem "Mačem Omena" pomoći će Thundercatsima da imaju stalnu šansu.
