Ljeto je 1941. godine. Wilhelm, njegov mlađi brat Friedhelm, Charlotte, Viktor i Greta opraštaju se u Berlinu i obećaju si da će se ponovno sastati poslije rata. Nisu ni slutili koliko će vremena proći, kao ni koliko će ih strašna iskustva, nedaće i strahote rata promijeniti. Doživljena prijateljstva i izdaje, povjerenje i razočaranje, iluzije i spoznaje, krivnja i odgovornost promijenit će živote braće i sestara zauvijek. Wilhelm i njegov brat poslani su na Istočnu bojišnicu, a Charlotte će ondje raditi kao medicinska sestra u poljskoj bolnici. Greta će se u Berlinu proslaviti kao pjevačica i to uz pomoć istaknutog časnika, a njezin dečko Viktor, Židov, doživjet će veliku izdaju te će ga deportirati u koncentracijski logor na istoku...
