Italija, 15. stoljeće: iznenadna smrt Giovija de Medicija, trgovca i bankara čuvene loze Medici, potresa Firencu. Njegovi sinovi, Cosimo i Lorenzo, nalaze se u središtu događaja i skrivaju opasnu tajnu - Giovanni je zapravo ubijen. Samo jedan od njih može postati glava obitelji, a sudbina tu ulogu dodjeljuje sanjaru i umjetniku Cosimu. No, suočavaju se s očevim neprijateljima koji žele preuzeti vlast nad Firencom, među kojima prednjači Ronaldo Albici, vođa plemićke frakcije, odlučan da spriječi uspon srednje klase koju podupiru Medici i da uništi Cosimovu viziju Firence. Uz prijetnje obitelji i životima, braća Cosimo i Lorenzo moraju pomiriti svoje različite temperamenta. Njihovi privatni životi također su burni, osobito Cosimov brak s Contessinom de Bardi, politički savez koji se razvio u snažno partnerstvo, a koji će biti na velikoj kušnji tijekom njegova egzila u Veneciji.
