Ismerkedjenek meg Renével, aki a legkevésbé ellenálló tagja a Francia Ellenállási Mozgalomnak. A II. világháború napjait éljük. René, a kis párizsi kávézó tulajdonosa cukor, vaj és egyéb luxuscikkek fejében hajlandó kisebb szívességeket tenni a megszálló csapatokat képviselő Kurt von Strohm ezredesnek. Ám egy nap betoppan hősünk életébe az ablakon át az ellenállási mozgalom egyik "szűkszavú" képviselője, aki semmit sem mond el kétszer. Hazafias kötelességére és két angol ejtőernyős közeli érkezésére figyelmezteti Renét, akinek élete ettől kezdve csupa megpróbáltatás: megpróbálja ugyanis elrejteni a két angol ejtőernyőst, megpróbálja anyósa ágya alatt installálni a rádióadóvevőt, megpróbálja kijátszani a német megszállók figyelmét, megpróbálja kielégiteni a két pincérlány olthatatlan szereleméhségét és megpróbálja elterelni a felesége figyelmét. Nem kis feladat René számára, akinek - mint majd kiderül - nem az ellenállás a fő erőssége.
