A történet a mai Japánban játszódik, ahol különféle szellemek, úgynevezett youmuk garázdálkodnak. Ezeket a youmukat a normál emberek nem látják, viszont ez nem mindenkire igaz, ugyanis vannak, akik ellenük harcolnak. Ők a Határőrzők, akik nem mellesleg munkájukért (függően az elfogott youmu értékétől) pénzt is kapnak. Főhőseink, Kuriyama Mirai és Kanbara Akihito, akiknek életét a sors végzetesen összefonja.
