Da quindici anni, Carter è alle prese con il fuoco incrociato dei due genitori divorziati e si prende cura dello spensierato fratello minore Trey. Presto, però, scopre di aver fatto parte inconsapevolmente di uno speciale programma di studio della dottoressa Judith, la psicoterapeuta dell'infanzia che ha monitorato i suoi comportamenti per un libro sugli effetti della separazione dei genitori sui figli. Arruolato per un seguito del libro, Carter si ritroverà immerso in qualcosa che genera terrore in tutta la famiglia e costringe lui a confrontarsi con il suo caotico passato.
