Nel corso della seconda guerra mondiale, in un paesino della Slovacchia occupata dai tedeschi, Tono Brtoko, un falegname, guarda con diffidenza lo zelo degli imperanti nazisti e prova una sorda ostilità nel confronti di Kolkocky, il cognato gerarca. Nominato da questi curatore ariano del negozio di Rozalie Lautmannova, una ebrea assai anziana, Tono accetta l'incarico per proteggerla e insieme ricevere dalla comunità ebrea un compenso. Cosi', mentre i paesani lo vedono nell'odiata veste di persecutore, la vecchia credendolo il nuovo commesso lo tratta con familiarità.
