Sayat Nova, vissuto nel XVII secolo durante il Rinascimento armeno, trascorre gran parte della sua esistenza a Tiflis, antico nome dell'odierna Tbilisi come trovatore di corte. Il poeta si innamora della regina della Georgia. È consapevole dei rischi che corre e si convince a intraprendere la via della reclusione spirituale in un convento. Ma il film non ha una trama vera e propria: procede per allusioni, simboli e assonanze visive, attingendo spesso al folclore e alla storia armena.
