1965. L'Agenzia spaziale sovietica, pressata dal Cremlino, vuole stringere i tempi e bruciare ancora sul tempo gli americani nella corsa allo spazio. L'obiettivo è quello di effettuare la prima "passeggiata" nello spazio esterno con la missione Voschod. A essere selezionati per quella che sembra essere una missione suicida piena di incognite sono i piloti Aleksej Leonov e Pavel Beljaev. Saranno loro i pionieri e i protagonisti della prima passeggiata spaziale extra veicolare della storia, dovendo però affrontare numerosi problemi tecnici durante la fase di rientro e sopravvivere per giorni al freddo siberiano prima di essere tratti in salvo e rimpatriati come eroi nazionali.
