Villaggio di Artigat, Francia meridionale, estate del 1542, durante il regno di Francesco I. Martin Guerre e Bertrande de Rols si sposano. Qualche anno dopo, accusato di aver commesso una rapina, Martin scompare improvvisamente. Quando, quasi dieci anni dopo, un uomo arriva ad Artigat sostenendo di essere Martin, la famiglia Guerre lo riconosce come tale; ma presto cominciano a sorgere dubbi sulla sua vera identità.
