Joe Simpson ripercorre una delle vicende più tragiche dell'epopea dell'alpinismo classico: il tentativo del giovane e brillante scalatore Toni Kurz che nel 1936 affrontò con tre compagni di cordata l'inviolata parete Nord dell'Eiger. Con una coinvolgente ricostruzione dei fatti accaduti in quei "maledetti" giorni, Simpson ci guida in un tempo e in uno spirito dell'alpinismo che sembrano oggi lontanissimi. L'impresa si concluse drammaticamente, ma rimane uno degli esempi più eroici e luminosi nella storia dell'alpinismo mondiale.
