Dora è un'insegnante in pensione di Rio, che per arrotondare scrive lettere per gli analfabeti. È una donna senza fascino e delusa, certamente cinica. Quando un bambino rimane solo per la morte della mamma, Dora lo raccoglie soltanto per venderlo a chi fa commercio di organi. Si pente, recupera il bambino ma deve fuggire. Così, attraversa il Brasile per accompagnare il piccolo da un fantomatico padre, che non viene mai trovato. In compenso il bambino si ricongiunge con due fratelli sconosciuti, mentre Dora ha tratto qualcosa dall'esperienza. Saprà star sola, meno disperata.
