William Forrester è un anziano scrittore che ha pubblicato un unico grande romanzo a 23 anni e si è poi ritirato dal mondo, rifugiandosi in un anonimo appartamento del Bronx. Jamal invece è un ragazzo afro-americano povero, piccolo genio del basket, studente in un college di Manhattan ma soprattutto romanziere in erba, che nel misterioso Forrester trova un maestro di letteratura e un secondo padre.
