Il capitano Abbott, comandante del sommergibile "Starfish" viene incaricato di prelevare delle nuove mine a risonanza, che i giapponesi hanno usato per sbarrare lo stretto di Tsushima. La missione viene portata a termine da Abbott, che, però, per salvare l'equipaggio è costretto a lasciare in mare Barton, uno dei sommozzatori. Il sacrificio di Barton provoca un sentimento di rancore nei confronti del capitano.
