Chung Chun-Tao, detta Ah Tao, è nata a Taishan, in Cina. Il padre adottivo muore durante l'occupazione giapponese e la madre la manda a lavorare. Appena adolescente, Chung Chun-Tao diventa una "amah", una serva, per la famiglia Leung, condividendone la vita quotidiana. Col tempo alcuni membri della famiglia passano a miglior vita e altri emigrano. Trascorsi sessant'anni, Ah Tao è ora al servizio di Roger, l'unico della famiglia rimasto a Hong Kong, dove lavora nell'industria cinematografica. Un giorno, tornando a casa, Roger trova la donna in preda a un ictus e la porta precipitosamente in ospedale. Una volta fuori pericolo, Ah Tao gli comunica di volersi ritirare in un ospizio. Qui conosce la sua nuova "famiglia": l'energica ma premurosa direttrice Ms Choi e un campionario assortito di anziani ospiti...
