Nella poverissima provincia del Gansu, nel nord-ovest della Cina quasi al confine con la Mongolia, Guiying e Youtie hanno ormai una certa età e le rispettive famiglie non sanno cosa farsene di due anime tanto solitarie se non cercare di unirle in matrimonio. Tra le dune del deserto, la coppia e il loro asinello si stabiliscono in una di quelle casupole che il governo sta cercando di demolire. I due, però, sono pieni di risorse e si mettono al lavoro per costruire una casa e una vita contadina degne di questo nome.
