La telenovela è un remake della telenovela venezuelana La Dueña, scritta da José Ignacio Cabrujas. Il nome riflette un termine locale o uno slang in Messico per riferirsi a una persona riconosciuta come il boss principale. Tuttavia, il titolo riflette sia il protagonista che la lotta degli antagonisti per conquistare potere, autorità e rispetto in un campo lavorativo tradizionalmente considerato compito da uomo.
