ポーランド人移民カロル・カロルは、フランス人妻ドミニクが彼のインポテンス（勃起不全）を理由に結婚半年後に離婚したことで、結婚も仕事も国も失います。共同で所有していた事業を失いフランスを去らざるを得なくなったカロルは、同じポーランド人亡命者ミコワイに自国へ密輸してもらうよう頼みます。

有名な作曲家の妻は、夫と娘を亡くす自動車事故から生き延びる。今や一人で、彼女は古いアイデンティティを捨て、新たに得た自由を探求するが、他の人々、特に夫の愛人という自分でも知らなかった存在と切っても切れない関係にあることに気付く。
