トルストイの同名小説を基にした戦争大河ドラマ。１９世紀の帝政ロシアの末期、ロシアを巻き込んだ戦争を背景に、貴族の私生児ピエール（Ｈ・フォンダ）と伯爵令嬢ナターシャ（Ａ・ヘプバーン）の恋愛劇を描く。
１９世紀、帝政ロシア末期のモスクワ。フランス軍の侵攻がささやかれる中、貴族の私生児ピエールはロストフ伯爵の令嬢ナターシャに想いを寄せていた。そんなある日、親友アンドレイ公爵から知らせを受け、危篤の父を看取るピエール。やがて彼は、亡くなった父の莫大な財産を相続し、それを目当てに接近してきた貴族令嬢ヘレーネと結婚することに。一方、アンドレイは妊娠した妻を残して戦地へ赴くも敗戦の憂き目に遭い、負傷帰還兵となってしまう。そんな彼は、いつしかナターシャと愛し合うようになる
